Media Education at secondary technical schools in Liberec region

I Abstract This thesis' main theme is media education at secondary technical schools in Liberec region - SPŠ a VOŠ Liberec, SPŠ stavební Liberec a VOŠMOA Jablonec nad Nisou. The theoretical part defines media education, media literacy and digital literacy. The thesis presents materials which serve as the main source for creating the school education programme (ŠVP) for different specializations. Three methods which can be used while teaching media education are also described - cooperative learning, discussion and inquiry-based learning. In the practical part six teachers from three different schools were interviewed. These interviews showed that no school offers media education as a separate subject in the school year of 2023/2024, even though the respondents consider it to be important. The biggest issues with creating a separate subject seem to lie in insufficient time options and insufficient teacher qualification. Each interviewed teacher focuses on media literacy differently during their lessons: some analyse texts, some oral speech, some practice using different sources and their citations.
Didactic Potencial of the Project-Based Approach to Teaching Journalistic Style and Media Education at Secondary Schools

The main aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the possible benefits of the project-based approach to teaching journalistic style and media education at secondary schools on the basis of my own pedagogical practice. The first, theoretical part deals firstly with the role of media and mass media in modern society, with an emphasis on the current state of the media environment in the Czech Republic and the habits of pupils in secondary schools in consuming media content. This is followed by a definition of the concepts of media literacy and media education, a set of publicly available inspirational sources, curricular anchoring of the topic and the perspective of Waldorf pedagogy. A basic insight into the characteristics of journalistic style and project-based learning is also provided. The second part of the thesis is devoted to a description and reflection on the project of creating a class student magazine at the Waldorf Lyceum in Prague. First, the principles of teacher self- evaluation and the principles of the 3A methodology (annotation-analysis-alteration) are introduced, then the genesis and context of the described project, its progress and reflection are described. The bachelor thesis is devoted to media education and media literacy of secondary vocational school students. The aim of the thesis is to describe, analyse and interpret the state of media education and media literacy of secondary vocational school students. The thesis is divided into two main parts, namely the theoretical part and the application part. The theoretical part deals with the definition of the term "media education" and its history. The theoretical part also defines the term "media literacy" and interconnects these two concepts. Furthermore, the theoretical part gives further examples for professional and leisure media education. The subsequent application part of the thesis deals with research on the state of media education and media literacy of students in secondary vocational schools. The research is carried out by a quantitative approach using a questionnaire survey method. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the results of the research investigation.
Media Literacy as Perceived by Key Agents of the Media Education of Adults

The topic of the dissertation is media literacy as perceived by key agents of the media education of adults. Media literacy is a term that can be viewed differently and whose content changes over time. For this reason, the term is introduced in its entirety. While the views of politicians and theorists can be derived from published legislation and scientific literature, the views of people most engaged in the development of adult media literacy in practice are not known. Therefore, the dissertation focuses on how the individual agents of adult media education (organizers, participants and officials) perceive the concept of media literacy, whether they share a common perspective on media literacy and whether it is possible to characterize representatives of individual concepts. The prelude to this phase of the research was a qualitative content analysis, which provided a typology of opportunities for adult media education in the Czech Republic. This was then used to select the most diverse sample of educational events and informants for the main phase of the qualitative research. Media education through the lens of the professional teaching community

The aim of the thesis entitled Media Education through the lens of the professional teaching community is to identify the issues and topics that appear in the discourse on media education in the Czech Republic, especially from the perspective of teachers and experts dealing with this issue. Using theoretical foundations based primarily on the framework curricula and surveys from recent years and content analysis of online discussions under news articles, the state of media education in the Czech Republic will be investigated. These findings will be subsequently verified and questioned through in-depth interviews with stakeholders from the school and educational institutions environment. Thus, two qualitative methods will be used in the analytical part, which will increase the reliability of the research results. A secondary purpose of the research is the possibility of further testing the resulting hypotheses or questions, for example through a questionnaire survey. Teaching about Disinformation. On Media Education in the Czech Republic, Finland, and the UK

This bachelor's thesis deals with misinformation and demonstrates how schools in selected countries approach the issue of misinformation in media education and subsequently compares these approaches. The thesis focuses on the concept of misinformation and distinguishes other related terms (fake news, hoaxes, conspiracy theories, etc.). Furthermore, the thesis analyzes the fundamental aspects of media education, specifically in the Czech Republic, Finland, and the United Kingdom. This section provides the reader with a clearer picture of how individual countries approach media education. The comparison is specifically emphasized on the topic of misinformation. Thus, the thesis aims to answer whether Czech students are sufficiently educated in dealing with misinformation and media in general.
Genaration X and its media literacy

This bachelor thesis explores the level of media literacy of Generation X. It examines the media literacy of its members through related topics such as Generation X's media habits, trust in the media or media education opportunities. The theoretical part introduces the topic of media literacy and the historical development of media education, explains their importance for individuals and society, presents current media education offerings in the context of lifelong learning and the latest research conducted in this area. The practical part is devoted to the qualitative analysis of ten in- depth interviews. It examines the experiences and attitudes of Generation X representatives from two perspectives, the initial approach focusing on each respondent separately to convey the respondent's answers as a unique combination of individual experiences, habits and opinions. The subsequent part of the analysis provides a comparison of the respondents' answers and formulates sub-themes suitable for further research on media literacy and media education for Generation X. These include the role of opinion leaders in decision-making, information overload, and self- reflection in media education.
Media as a topic of history classes

Mediální výchova jako téma hodin dějepisu - Abstract Bc. Martina Leciánová This work deals with the topic of media education as a topic in history classes. Its aim was to find out whether the Framework Education Program (FEP) deals with this issue and, on the basis of it, to find out to what extent it appears in the literature itself. The work consisted of a quantitative analysis of the mentioned documents falling under the Ministry of Education and Culture and history textbooks for the 9th grade. Part of the output was also the proposal of a methodological tool for facilitating the teaching of media education in the history class, which was created on the basis of interviews with history teachers. The results show that the RVP does not officially recognize this possibility of teaching, but media education as such appears in textbooks in limited quantities, and even the interviewed teachers stated that they perceive media education as part of history education. The proposed methodical tool is a database that would contain sources and resources that can be used in class to save time for teachers in preparation. The database could work through the mutual cooperation of individual teachers. So-called "from them for them".
Media education in Prague high schools from the perspective of students and teachers

The aim of this master's thesis was to inquire into media education in Prague's high schools using the qualitative methods from the point of view of its two main participants - students and teachers. The main reason for focusing on these students was that they achieved the highest scores in media literacy among their peers from Czechia. For the purpose of the analysis, data were collected using in-depth semi-structured interviews with teachers from Prague's high schools, a focus group with second-year students from Gymnázium Na Zatlance, and an online questionnaire that was completed by 55 students from several high schools in Prague. The data were subsequently analyzed using the open coding method and thematic analysis. The results indicate that despite being classified as cross cutting topic in the Framework Education Programme by the Ministry of Education, more than half of the respondents reported receiving no media education. Furthermore, the results reveal that inclusion of media education in lectures depends mainly on the teachers and their personal motivation to incorporate it. Media Education and Misinformation at the First Stage of Primary School

This master's thesis deals with the connection between reading and media literacy and the potential use of this connection in primary schools during of not only the Czech language lessons, to develop these literacies within the cross-curricular topic of media education. The first part of this thesis explains important concepts related to reading and media literacy and everything related to this topic. In the practical second part, the knowledge gained from the theoretical part is utilized to create a methodology and working sheets. The methodology serves as a guide for teachers on how to work with the worksheets with students in the second educational period of the first grade of primary school. The created worksheets should contribute to the development of media and reading literacy for students attending the 4th or 5th grade of primary school.
